Senate Immigration Bill Explained

The US Senate passed a bill that outlined key changes in the debate about immigration.  The primary focus of the bill was securing the border.  In fact, none of the changes that offer a path to citizenship will take place unless the "border is secured."  The border will be considered secure if 90% of the people trying to cross are caught or turned back.  If these thresholds are met, then there is a path to citizenship.  This path includes requirements such as being in the US before 2011, a $500 fine and a 10 year "provisional status" after which people can apply for permanent status and pay another $1,000 fine.  There are also special programs to bring in both high skilled and low skilled workers, as well as a requirement that all employers use an electronic verification system to ensure that workers are documented.   However, the House has not supported this bill.  Why would members of the House not support this?  Do you think the border can be 90% secure, really the question is how reasonable are the requirements in this bill?

  1. I don't think there is any real way for the border to be secure.Even if you had the best thought out security in the world people will eventually find a new way to get to America.

  3. I think that they purposely made unrealistically high requirements so that the bill has less of a chance to be passed.

  4. I don't think that the border security requirements should have any affect on someone's ability to become a citizen because they can't control the border security.

  5. I think that the fines and the "problems" are just ways to try to get people paranoid and shorten the amount of illegal immigrants.

  6. The House would not support it because it takes too much time and energy to focus on purely immigrants when they have more important things to focus on. I don't think anything will change, it'll just make things worse.

  7. the border will never be secure because no matter what if they put in more immigration patrols the cartel member that work in the border will fight against them and it will be worster and mexicans will find another way to to get to the american side or even do something more worster that could hurt there family member

  8. The house of rep wouldn't support the bill because it was to much. 100 percent surveillance of the border with Mexico and that 90 percent of would-be crossers are caught or turned back.

  9. The house wouldn't support the bill because it was to much. They dont want to focus on one bill that will secure the border only because of Immigrants.

  10. I don't think the house wants to support the bill because they dont feel like is going to help and they're just going to waste money on it.

  11. The main purpose about this bill is trying to secure the entire border, but you can't do that without the support of the House of Representative. Also, 100% surveillance and 90% of the immigrants would be returned back, 90% can be very tricky because you don't know who came in. With things like this you can't be so sure about it.

  12. i don't think the house wants to support the bill because they just wast money and make the economy down for most of the illegal immigration and make more problems for the country most of the time .

  13. Well the House of R. won't want to accept the bill, maybe i'm just stereotypical but they don't seem to want immigrants in the US even when they're documented but hey maybe i'm just stereo typical the house would see it a waste of money and time.

  14. The House might vote against it because the people voting against it are Republican and the majority of immigrants would be Democrat. I believe the bill is not reasonable because the border can't be 90% secure, if one person can get through, anyone can get through making the border either 100% or 0% secure.

  15. the border will never be uncross-able the people will always find a way to come through the border and enter the U.S

  16. How can they prove that 90% of people are caught crossing the border, if they have no way of knowing whos crossing?

  17. the boarder will never be secured because no matter how much security you put there will always be a way for the immigrants to get through to america

  18. They wont be able to stop immigration. there's just too many people trying to come. they say its 90 percent secure if there's one coming through why cant others come the same way. politics are garbage

  19. The requirements of this are not reasonable because the border can't be secured the 100% of the time. The cartoon shows how immigrants would become Democrats but the house is controlled by Republicans.

  20. Its basiclly impossible for them to keep 90% survielliance on the border, the border is a large land or area. They won't be able to secure the border fully no matter how much money or time they spend on the border. 3,500 additional boder agent can't cover the entire border.

  21. No matter how much is the border secured immigrants are going to do their best to step into the U.S. and live a better life for themselves and their family.

  22. Republicans don't want the path to citizenship because they don't have immigrants in their house district.

  23. The Republicans from the House don't support the path to citizenship because they don't know how its like, because they only live in districts were there's not immigrants that's why they don't care.

  24. no matter what they do people will always find a way through and we have to remember that we are all immigrants as well even if we were born in the US, our family members migrated to the US, why do they want to stop people from reaching their dream, they just want a better life, they should have that if nothing else, the right to prosper

  25. I dont think you can stop EVERYONE from crossing the border. Someone is eventually going to found a way to pass over. and the cost it takes to become a US Citizen is over the top and exaggerated.

  26. It's amazing that this law still has not passed despite widespread public support. The Republicans are focused on winning the 2014 Congressional Elections, but unless they can quickly change course, they will not have a good chance to win the 2016 Presidential Election.
